The meaning of the 1st day of Tet

There is a saying in the world that “the 1st of the Father’s Day, the 2nd of the Mother’s Day, the 3 of the Teacher’s New Year”, so the meaning of the 1st day of Tet is also based on that. This day is dedicated to fathers because according to Vietnamese tradition, the father has the highest position and is the breadwinner of the family.

The proverb “A child without a father is like a house without a roof” showing the important position of the father in the family. It is likened to the “roof of the house” – the highest position, sheltering the members inside. Father spends his life telling his loved ones to be the strong pillar of the family.

Therefore, the first day of Tet is a day for fathers, an opportunity for children to show their gratitude and respect to their father.

2 The meaning of worshiping on the 1st day of Tet

It is an important occasion, a family reunion day after a year of hard work and study. The Tet tray is always full of dishes and is taken care of more carefully every day. With the meaning of wishing for a full, affluent and happy year, almost every family’s New Year’s tray is presented with all kinds of dishes, neatly arranged and polished.

Not only that, the tray also shows gratitude to ancestors, grandparents, and even those who have contributed to building the country and bringing peace to everyone. So the offering tray from the night of the 30th until the end of the 3rd day of the New Year is prepared by every family.

3 Worshiping tray on the 1st day of Tet

According to the book Vietnamese Beliefs by author Luu Anh published and circulated by the Young Publishing House, the tray of the first day of the New Year includes a tray of five fruits, incense, flowers, votive papers, lamps, candles, betel nut, wine, tea, etc. Banh chung (or banh tet). Both savory and vegetarian dishes are fine, but they must be carefully prepared and decorated dignified and neatly.

Today, no longer focusing too much on food, the tray only needs about 4-5 dishes suitable for the family economy. Most important of all is the heart towards the ancestors, and the atmosphere of gathering together on Tet.

Northern dishes

The tray in the North will usually be full of 4 bowls, 4 plates representing the four pillars, four seasons, and four directions. In addition, more sophisticated families will have up to 6 bowls, 6 plates or even 8 bowls, 8 plates.

The 4 plates in the Northern platter are usually 1 plate of boiled chicken, 1 plate of pork, 1 plate of pork rolls and 1 plate of cinnamon rolls. And always have a plate of sticky rice gac with wishes of luck, bright red like gac color in the new year.

4 bowls include usually 1 bowl of stewed pork leg with bamboo shoots, 1 bowl of drop ball, 1 bowl of vermicelli and 1 bowl of sprouted mushrooms. Pork legs must be cooked with both lean and fat pork, in the middle of the bowl there is also a square piece of bacon, which is cut into quarters, evenly blooming at all four corners.

Usually in the North, in the New Year, there will be no killing, so most of the dishes in the tray must be prepared in advance.

Central dish

The central tray is usually full of dishes from dry to watery than in the South. Most of them will be savory and spicy dishes such as spring rolls, grilled beef with lemongrass and chili, roasted pork, roasted chicken, cooked beef, lean braised radish with pork, lean pork rim, etc.

In addition, there are beef and pork soaked in fish sauce and a feature of the Central dish is the roll dish, so it is indispensable for rice paper and raw vegetables to be rolled. Besides, there are also mixed dishes such as: chicken mixed with laksa leaves, mixed figs, mixed bamboo shoots, mixed jackfruit as an appetizer.

Southern dishes

The tray in the South is usually simple and depends heavily on the family economy, showing the richness and fertility of the region, not focusing too much on the sophisticated like the North.

The dishes in the Southern tray are rich in menu and not too restrictive according to a certain standard. Usually fried spring rolls, fresh sausages, shredded boiled chicken salad, palanquin.
